Do you want to speak English like a native speaker? The only effective way to do this is through constant practice.

Think about how children learn their mother tongue: first they just listen, then they start speaking, then read, and only finally — write. So, to significantly improve your English proficiency, you need to systematically practise these four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The key question is: how do you do this regularly? The secret lies in integrating English into your daily life. It’s much easier than it seems at first glance. Today we’ll discuss how to learn spoken English at home and beyond. These methods are guaranteed to help you reach a new level of fluency.

Listening exercises

As we mentioned earlier, even children listen first and only then start speaking, so it’s worth focusing on listening. Listen to English-language songs on your way to work. Put on podcasts whilst cleaning the house. Listen to the news in English whilst walking the dog. This is a simple but very important habit for improving your language skills. To make rapid progress, you should spend at least a few hours a day listening. If your schedule is too busy and you don’t have time for dedicated study sessions, use any spare moments to listen to songs or audiobooks.

Why it’s important to practise listening whilst out and about

Walks, sports or journeys on public transport mainly engage your physical energy, leaving your mind free. Don’t waste this time scrolling through social media feeds. Instead, fill your music player with English-language content. Regardless of your musical preferences, try to listen closely to the lyrics and grasp the meaning of what is being said.

This approach allows you to practise every day without spending extra time. Furthermore, listening provides a deeper understanding of cultural and linguistic nuances. Even if you aren’t 100% focused, your brain will still absorb useful information.

Podcasts — an effective learning method

Make the most of podcasts. This is one of the most popular formats among language learners. Podcasts allow you to combine practice with gaining interesting knowledge about art, sport, politics or the psychology of communication.

There are both specialised learning podcasts for different levels (from basic to advanced) and authentic content for native speakers. When listening to them, pay attention not only to the content but also to intonation, pace and pronunciation. Simply install the relevant app (such as iTunes or Stitcher) on your mobile phone and listen to the content even whilst on the move.

Watch films, TV programmes and the news

Start by watching with subtitles, but try not to read them constantly. If the pace is too fast, you can pause the video, read the text and continue watching. As soon as you feel confident in your listening comprehension, you should turn off the subtitles.

An effective method is to use ‘delayed subtitles’ (this is easy to set up in VLC or KMPlayer). If the subtitles appear with a 2-second delay, your brain has no choice but to try to understand the dialogue by listening first. This trains your listening skills, rather than your speed-reading ability.

Look for online resources

The internet offers a wealth of platforms, such as Cambridge English, designed to improve listening comprehension skills. It is also a good idea to download specialised mobile apps with lessons and tests tailored to your current level of English.

How to practise spoken English: exercises to improve your speaking skills

Do you want to speak English like a native speaker? There are several proven ways to significantly improve your speaking skills.

Join conversation clubs or voice chats

Practical conversation is the most effective way to master a language quickly. Taking part in English-speaking clubs or being active in voice chats helps you gain the necessary communication experience whilst improving your listening skills. What’s more, it’s a great way to have fun and make new friends. Surround yourself with like-minded people who are open to practising together: play games, have lunch together or simply chat. Use Google and social media groups to find similar communities in your city.

Use a mirror and focus on speaking freely

Set aside a few minutes a day to practise in front of a mirror. Choose an interesting topic, set a timer for 3 minutes and discuss it with an imaginary conversation partner. The main aim of this exercise is to analyse your own body language and learn to express ideas without long pauses or stutters.

Remember: the more you hesitate, the less confident your speech sounds. Try not to stop. If you can’t think of a specific word, try to describe the idea in other words. In the early stages, your speech may not be perfect from a grammatical point of view, but that’s not a problem.

Do exercises to improve your pronunciation

In practice, students often pay insufficient attention to working on their pronunciation. However, to become proficient, it is worth learning to reproduce sounds correctly, use appropriate intonation, maintain the right pace, and place the stress correctly.

One of the most effective exercises is recording your own voice. It may seem unusual, but this method helps you objectively identify your weaknesses. Work on the problem areas until you are satisfied with the result.

Self-study exercises to improve reading skills

Reading is a fundamental and one of the most accessible and effective tools for expanding your vocabulary. Below are exercises that will help make this process systematic and effective.

Set aside specific time for reading

You can read for pleasure anywhere and at any time, but to improve your language skills in a focused way, you need to be fully concentrated. That is why you should plan your reading sessions in advance.

Try to spend at least 20 minutes a day reading in English. Find a quiet spot where you can concentrate on a book or article without the risk of distraction. For maximum effectiveness, prepare for the session: keep a dictionary and a notebook handy to jot down new phrases, and switch off the sound on your mobile phone.

Read books, magazines and online articles in English

If you’re just starting out on your language learning journey, it’s worth looking into children’s books or comics. Alternatively, you could choose a book you’re already familiar with, one you’ve read before in your native language. The main rule is to choose only what you really enjoy, and make sure the text’s difficulty matches your current level. If you fancy testing your skills, try reading material at a higher level.

To find interesting material, you can use the following online resources:

  • Jellybooks — allows you to discover new publications and preview around 10% of the text to decide whether the book is worth your further attention.
  • Listopia on Goodreads — provides access to themed lists, such as ‘Books everyone should read at least once’.
  • Your Next Read — helps you find books similar to those you’ve read before.

We also recommend changing the interface language in the settings of your phone, tablet or computer to
English — this is a simple but effective way to expand your vocabulary every day. Your brain will naturally absorb new terms.

Writing exercises for learning spoken English

It’s no secret that writing practice helps you master the English language thoroughly, especially its grammatical structure. You can improve your writing skills with regular English vocabulary exercises, even if you don’t spend much time on them.

Create your own vocabulary book

Regularly write down unfamiliar words and phrases along with their meanings and clear examples of usage. Keeping your own vocabulary list helps you memorise vocabulary more quickly and use it correctly in speech.

If you’ve already created such a dictionary, use the words from it to write short stories. This is one of the best basic exercises for learning how to construct sentences correctly and use new words in the right context. Depending on how much time you have, try to include 10 to 15 new words in a single story.

Describe an image

Choose any random photo or drawing and describe it in as much detail as possible. By doing this exercise, you’ll get a better grasp of adjectives and learn to describe feelings and your perception of the world around you. Pinterest is a great resource for finding visual content.

Leave comments on blogs

Reading themed blogs is a great way not only to learn something new but also to practise writing. You don’t need to be an expert on the subject to express your opinion under an article. Just try to write a short comment or ask a question.

Do grammar exercises online

Choose online resources that explain the rules of English grammar in a simple and accessible way. Daily practice will help you gain confidence, allowing you to communicate and correspond in a foreign language easily and naturally.

Start practising today! If you want to improve your English, don’t waste any time. Some of the exercises listed require daily practice, whilst others can be integrated into your daily routine. Identify the skills that need the most attention and practise consistently. Forming new habits takes time, but soon these activities will become a natural part of your life.
